Equinox Gold Secures Federal Approval for Nevada Mine

Equinox Gold has cleared a critical regulatory path toward expanding its footprint in the United States after receiving federal approval to build the South Railroad mine in Nevada. The U.S. Bureau of Land Management issued a positive record of decision on Monday, effectively finalizing the National Environmental Policy Act permitting process. This move removes the primary hurdle for what the company views as a cornerstone of its future growth strategy.

With the paperwork now settled, Equinox is moving quickly into the execution phase. Detailed engineering for the project is already more than halfway complete, and heavy mining equipment is expected to start arriving on site by the end of this year. If everything stays on schedule, mining activities will kick off in the spring of 2027, with the first gold pours anticipated by 2028. According to recent feasibility studies, the open pit heap leach operation is projected to produce an average of 130,000 ounces of gold annually during its first five years of operation.

President Jason Simpson described the approval as a major milestone that aligns with the company’s broader ambition to add 800,000 ounces of annual production through organic development. This expansion comes at a time of significant momentum for Equinox, which recently completed a high profile merger with Orla Mining. That deal has helped establish the firm as one of North America’s newest senior gold producers, strengthening its presence in Canada while building out a diverse operational runway across Mexico and Nicaragua.

The timing of the Nevada approval coincides with strong financial performance and aggressive scaling efforts elsewhere in their portfolio. Recent quarterly reports showed substantial net income and robust revenues driven by high realized gold prices and steady output from existing sites like the Greenstone and Valentine mines. As Equinox looks toward 2028 and beyond, it aims to leverage these new approvals and ongoing expansions to potentially push its total annual output past 1.9 million ounces.
