Vancouver based OceanaGold has reached an agreement to acquire Australian developer Ausgold in a deal valued at 549 million US dollars. The move grants OceanaGold full ownership of the Katanning gold project in Western Australia, adding a strategic piece to its growing global portfolio. The transaction received unanimous backing from the Ausgold board, with major shareholder Dundee Corporation also signaling its support for the merger.
Under the terms of the agreement, Ausgold shareholders will primarily receive OceanaGold common shares, though there is an option for some to opt for cash payments up to a limit of 137 million US dollars. Once the deal closes, those investing in Ausgold are expected to own between six and eight percent of OceanaGold. This expansion comes at a time when surging bullion prices have given gold producers more financial flexibility to pursue aggressive acquisitions.
The centerpiece of the deal, the Katanning project, is envisioned as an open pit operation designed to produce over 100,000 ounces of gold every year across a decade long lifespan. While formal production isn’t slated until 2029, OceanaGold intends to spend the next few years conducting further drilling and refining technical reports. Chief Executive Officer Gerard Bond described the asset as a high quality addition that fits naturally with the company’s existing operational strengths in premium mining regions.
This acquisition arrives amidst a broader period of growth for OceanaGold, which recently listed on the New York Stock Exchange to attract more institutional investors. Beyond Australia, the company is pushing forward with an underground mine in South Carolina and another large scale project in New Zealand. Additionally, it recently pledged nearly two billion dollars to extend the life of its flagship Didipio mine in the Philippines through 2037 after discussions with government leadership.
