FBI Seizes $560,000 In Crypto Tied To Hamas Fundraising

The FBI has successfully dismantled a sophisticated digital financing network used by Hamas to fund its military operations, seizing over 560,000 dollars in cryptocurrency. According to the Justice Department, the operation specifically targeted the Al Qassam Brigades, the group’s military wing. Along with the financial seizure, federal agents took control of several internet domains and servers that were being utilized to solicit donations and recruit new supporters globally.

The investigation revealed a complex system where supporters would contact specific email addresses listed on recruitment websites to receive payment instructions. Investigators discovered that Hamas was using a rotating series of cryptocurrency wallets, including those for the dollar-linked stablecoin Tether, to obscure the movement of money. By employing advanced blockchain analysis and reviewing exchange records, FBI agents were able to track how funds were consolidated and shifted through various over-the-counter brokers and digital bridge services.

Beyond the monetary loss for the organization, the takeover of web infrastructure provided a significant intelligence windfall for U.S. authorities. By redirecting domains like alaqsaflood.org to FBI-controlled servers, investigators were able to intercept incoming donations and gather data on thousands of individuals who had attempted to provide financial support to the group. This move effectively blinded one of their primary channels for coordinating international funding.

U.S. Attorney Jeanine Ferris Pirro issued a stern warning following the announcement, emphasizing that encrypted networks and digital currencies do not offer total anonymity from federal law enforcement. She noted that these efforts are part of a broader strategy to degrade Hamas’s ability to wage war. The current probe involving offices in Albuquerque and New York complements recent Treasury Department sanctions against Gaza-based nonprofits suspected of acting as fronts for terrorist financing.
